NEWS: Noam Chomsky gives free talk in Belfast

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Last night Noam Chomsky gave a free talk to a packed St Mary’s College in Belfast, presented by the Féile an Phobail festival. Professor Chomsky, perhaps the world’s most pre-eminent linguist (a popular maxim describing Chomsky as being “to linguistics what Einstein was to physics”) but more famously the most prominent American political dissident writing today, has written over 70 works on topics ranging from left-wing political theory to criticism of American foreign policy.

NEWS: Demand for housing as students are turned away from Elms

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

BELFAST FESTIVAL AT QUEEN’S REVIEW: Josh Ritter and the Love Canon String Band

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The Empire was a beautiful setting for Josh Ritter’s performance with the Love Canon String Band. Lining up on the steps in the rain, the first people in the queue rushed to claim the balcony seats and the tables. Josh Ritter is an artist I highly recommend seeing live, one of the most noticeable aspects of his performance is his sheer happiness to be there. He struggles to conceal his grins and smiles as he sings, plays and performs. It is a pleasure to watch his laughter and excitement; it is infectious and made me equally happy to be there. Josh’s bass player Zach Hickman told us that, in fact, the Love Canon String Band is not real, it was dreamt up over 40 beers apiece, and the only times they have played before this tour was at Ritter family wedding functions!

COMMENT: Crisis of Cars

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Every university has its problems and Queen’s is no different – low attendance, too much alcohol to name but a few. However, it could be said that one of the major problems for Queen’s University students, especially those who drive, is the never ending struggle with traffic, parking, and public transport. One must deal with the traffic jams, one way streets which are easily blocked and being constantly late to class. Many would say that it is a student’s responsibility to leave home in plenty of time but how can one predict that an ambulance will be parked on University Street for half an hour? It n’t be practical to leave two hours early (depending on where you live) on the off-chance that there will be a problem!

SPORT: Not a time to bet

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

For anybody looking to put a punt on who’s going to win the Premier League or even clinch a Champions League place this year, they should probably withhold such confidence. Already this season, title holders Manchester United have been beaten my newcomers Burnley, Liverpool have went on their worst run since 1987 having lost four games in a row, and Chelsea were deservedly beaten my top four hopefuls Aston Villa. The established order is going through a shaky time indeed.
