FEATURE: Would an independent Scotland spell the end of the Union?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

On Monday, people around the world celebrated Burns Night. The 25th of January was also to be the date the SNP released the bill that they hoped would be a first step towards an independent Scotland. What would this mean for Northern Ireland?

ARTS: Ormsby and Longley celebrate RBAI’s bi-centenary

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

The commencement of the Royal Belfast Academical Institute’s bi-centenary celebrations saw the coming together of two of Northern Ireland’s most renowned literary talents. An evening with Michael Longley and Frank Ormsby combined a humorous reminiscence of school days with an evocative poetry reading. As the Irish Professor of Poetry, Michael Longley delivered a speech which resonated not only with past pupils, but offered an account of Belfast which all the audience could relate to. His belief that no experience is complete without poetry marked the significance of the occasion, whilst highlighting the important role which R.B.A.I. has played in shaping some of Northern Ireland’s most prominent literary figures.

COMMENT: Horror strikes Haiti

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

On January 12th 2010, the world got a deadly reminder as to just how destructive nature can be. For the people of Haiti, it came without warning and left a trail of devastation in its wake. While earthquakes are nothing new to the island, this latest vicious seismic event was the worst the country has seen in 200 years. It measured 7.0 on the Richter scale with its epicentre being 16 miles west of the island’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and its focus has been noted as approximately 8 miles underground. The earthquake was followed by 33 aftershocks ranging from 5.0 to 5.9 according to the United States Geological Survey.

INTERVIEW: Actress Laura Donnelly

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Laura Donnelly, a Belfast born and bred starlet, has quickly become a name in that business called show. Only twenty-seven years of age, she has an impressive portfolio and a blossoming career, avoiding “the rut” which most young aspiring actors unfortunately fall into early on in their career. Her abundant talent has seen her conquer film, television and theatre roles, having portrayed Juliet in the open air in the London summer evenings. Of this Laura says, “It was an absolute fantasy come true.”

A facebook group has been set up which questions the quality of service at the new library at Queen’s during the exam period. The group named, ‘Queen’s Library situation is a joke’, encourages QUB facebook users to air their grievances. The majority of  the criticism appears to be in regard to the opening hours.

There are comments suggesting that a “sit-in” is being organised.

FEATURE: A New Year’s Resolution (hopefully)

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

January – possibly the most depressing month of the year. Why? Although we usually try to go into the new year by celebrating, and spirits are high (in the form of vodka and our mood), the novelty tends to wear off within the first few days of the year, especially for us students. No matter how much I am enjoying New Year’s eve, there is always that feeling of “I really have to start studying as soon as this is over”.

FEATURE: Meet the new year, same as the old year

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Oh January!  The first month of the year, immortalised in a 1970s song.   ‘January don’t be cold’, the singer implored.  Well this year January wasn’t listening.  We’ve witnessed the biggest cold snap since…well I was going to write, “since records began” but (a) I don’t know that for a fact and (b) I don’t know when records began.

LETTER: Regarding the new library

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Dear Gown,

Some things I think you should consider for your next issue. Regarding the new library, why the hell there is still work going on in the building when it’s supposed to be finished? Particularly on the second floor where there was scaffolding, and tables were out of use for most of last week. Also, why does cleaning take place during the day when it’s busy? I go to the library because it’s meant to be quiet, not to listen to someone hoovering!
