OPINION: The BBC were WRONG to have Nick Griffin on Question Time

Nick Griffin’s appearance on Question Time has provoked a huge amount of controversy. The BBC, along with members of the BNP, have argued that as the BNP acquired two seats in the European parliament it deserved to have its say on one of the main political programmes in the UK; after all, the BBC’s broadcasting mandate requires it to give equal prominence to political parties above a given level of representation.
However, Nick Griffin represents a different breed of politician. Griffin was a former member of the right wing supremacist group ‘The National Front’, and he is the first person to be allowed on Question Time who has been investigated for inciting racial hatred.

On Thursday evening over five hundred anti-fascist demonstrators dominated the media spotlight, just hours before the BBC would broadcast Question Time with Nick Griffin on the panel. This highly contentious decision has split public opinion, and divided politicians on whether this far right fascist party should be given a platform to air their heavily criticized odious views. Despite the efforts of the protestors, the BBC refused to intervene to stop the recording of the program. They issued a statement claiming the recording would go ahead as the BBC “are obliged to treat all legal political parties registered with the electoral commission with due impartiality”.

BELFAST FESTIVAL AT QUEEN’S REVIEW: Terminus

Previously described as both “gripping” and “grotesque”, Mark O’Rowe’s latest production ‘Terminus’ surely lives up to its reputation. Three inter-cutting and connecting monologues spoken by a trio of characters merely designated as A, B and C, come together as the ordinary turns extraordinary. An Abbey Theatre Commission, Terminus is a supernatural narrative told by three characters: a lonesome young woman looking for love; her mother, who is seeking atonement; and a serial killer who has sold his soul to the Devil. These three inter cutting and connecting monologues are spoken by a trio of characters merely designated as A, B and C.

OPINION: Barack Obama – A ‘Nobel’ President?

As far as politicians go, it would be safe to say that Barack Obama is a pretty popular one. Charismatic, seemingly sincere and eager for ‘change’, he charmed American voters into believing that he was some sort of superhuman politician who could singlehandedly set right the policy failures both domestic and foreign inherited from the previous Bush administration.

BELFAST FESTIVAL AT QUEEN’S REVIEW: Imelda May

Since her appearance on ‘Later with Jools Holland’ to an astounded audience that included Jeff Beck and Elbow, Imelda May is the up-and-coming artist of 2009. Her unique blend of stomping rockabilly tunes mixed with bluesy vocals has won her Best Newcomer at the Irish Music Awards, and that sound is now going on the road with a tour that spans Europe.

BELFAST FESTIVAL AT QUEEN’S REVIEW: Amnesty International presents ‘Stand Up For Justice’

The annual comedy night in aid of Amnesty International took place in the Ulster Hall this year, instead of its usual home at the Whitla Hall.Starring five different comedians, the night was kicked off by Karl Spain who is from Limerick, “Europe’s murder capital”. According to Spain, it is where the gay pride marches feature marchers saying things like, “If anyone sees me here I’ll never be able to say another mass in Ennis again.” Spain told the audience of how he thinks of the IRA and U2 in a similar way in that, “Some of their earlier stuff was good, but their recent stuff is a bit off.” He was a definite audience pleaser.

NEWS BRIEF: New ‘Suggestion Box’ erected in The Space

A new ‘Suggestion Box’ has been erected in The Space in the Union today, which means there are now two boxes of this kind in the building. Marketing manager, Seana Skeffington, told The Gown, “It’s all about getting opinions and suggestions for improvement, both here in the Union and across the way at the University.”

NEWS BRIEF: No seats for politics students

The first year Perspective on Politics class is over subscribed to the point of too many students and not enough places. By places, I mean seats. The Physics Emeleus Lecture Theatre holds enough seats for 6 less pupils that are attending the classes.

REVIEW: Couple’s Retreat

Four couples travel to a paradise resort in a bid to rekindle the sparks in their respective relationships….
As tantalising as this may sound, and as funny as the trailer may appear, I warn you not to be fooled. Upon seeing couples retreat, what irritated me the most (in a film consisting mostly of irritating moments) was the sheer rampant egotism of the writers/stars Vaughan and Faverau.

ARTS: The Godfather returns to the QFT

These are just a few of the many challenging themes running through Francis Ford Coppola’s outstanding adaption of Mario Puzo’s classic novel. The Godfather has been proclaimed by critics and movie goers alike to be the greatest film ever made. And now 37 years after its initial release, this popularity shows no sign of waning.
