SPORT: Bouncing fun as QUB hope to retain title

 

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

 

Reigning Intervarsities Trampoline champions QUB will be hoping to retain their all-Ireland title in Cork on 21st November. Twenty-seven competitors will travel to Cork on the Friday, seeking rewards for months of continuous training and constant preparation. Early 2009 witnessed ten QUB club members awarded with medals, thus expectations are high.

We no longer have to apologetically wave our student cards in the direction of the staff member at the front desk.  Thanks to modern technology we can wave them over a scanner, then wait ages for it to respond.  Revolutionary times.  When we’re old and wizened we can say, “I was there”.

NEWS: Political parties discuss 11+ in QUB’s Great Hall as Basil McCrea deems the situation to be a “sham”

“An ill-qualified, confusing, ultimately detrimental sham.”

This was the UUP Educational Spokesperson Basil McCrea’s summation of the post-transfer test situation in Northern Ireland. On Thursday 12th November, he, along with representatives of the other main political parties took part in a debate on the abolition of the transfer test, chaired by the BBC’s Jim Fitzpatrick in QUB’s Great Hall. Taking part also were Sinn Fein Education Spokesperson John O’Dowd, SDLP Education Spokesperson Dominic Bradley MLA, Alliance leader David Ford MLA and Mervyn Storey, DUP MLA and chairman of the Assembly’s Education Committee.

NEWS: “Open Executive” session in SU as sabbs give some answers

In our last issue, a leading article posed the question ‘What has your Executive Achieved?’ (2/11/09).  Today, the student population’s opportunity to put that question to the Executive face to face arrived, as an open meeting entitled ‘Open Executive’ was held in the SU as part of Political Activism Week.

NEWS: Union bars’ income falls as VPs asked to refrain from frequenting The Bot

A recent meeting has revealed that Students’ Union bars have seen a 13% fall in income. Sabbatical officers in attendance were also encouraged to show support for the Union by not socialising in The Bot.

REVIEW: The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingo

‘The Crimson Wing’ is the second wildlife film from Disney’s new wildlife label ‘Disneynature.’ It presents audiences with something they have never seen before as it follows the birth, life and death of the crimson winged flamingo in Tanzania’s Lake Natron; one of the last undiscovered locations in the world.

REVIEW: Calvin Harris – Ready for the Weekend

I’m sure most of you know the Calvin Harris story by now but for those of you who don’t, he’s the quirky electronic musician, singer-songwriter, and record producer from Scotland who began his career at 15 years of age in his very own bedroom on a Commodore Amiga! (A home computer of the 90’s!) Since then he has conquered the charts with his very own unique style.
