FEATURE: Fame is only a click away for local talent

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

If you have a creative idea that you want to broadcast, the internet is becoming more and more lucrative, and with sites to share videos, music and your written thoughts, there are endless chances to connect with a worldwide audience. This is especially handy when you are stuck on an island far from the glamour of Hollywood, as I assume most Gown readers are.

COMMENT: Exploiting indebted student drivers?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Finding a parking space around Queen’s is a nightmare. Students who have saved and paid to learn the valuable skill to drive,  and paid to insure and tax their cars, are being forced to abandon them in their driveways because it is simply impossible to find a space to park around Queen’s. This is an accepted grievance for student commuters who are getting up hours before lectures just to park. However, rumours of the introduction of paid parking around the city centre campus will not only frustrate local businesses but force indebted students to fork out even more to receive a university education.

COLUMN: Clarissa Long explains it all

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The enormous Queen’s University with its silent students and swapping those short New York minutes for Belfast hours -

I love New York City. I love walking in a group of hundreds of people, like we’re one great pack of sheep. I love the lights, the ambulances, yes, even the ‘New York Minute’ mentality. So why did I come here to Belfast? I wanted a change of scene. I’m someone who definitely likes being in their comfort zone, but I also think it’s really important to get out sometimes and live a little.

SPORT: Luck of the euro draw for Ireland?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The draw for the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign took place on 7th February and has left Northern Ireland facing a mammoth battle for qualification. The north face current World Cup champions Italy, Serbia and Slovenia, Estonia and the Faroe Islands. Nigel Worthington commented, “I would rather play the bigger nations because from a player’s point of view to get up for those games is not so much of a problem.”

His optimism, however, is questionable considering Northern Ireland’s recent run of bad form.
