ARTS: Molière’s The Miser set to be Lyric’s last play in Elmwood Hall
The Miser is the Lyric Theatre’s final play in Elmwood Hall before the new theatre opens next spring. Said to be “One of the funniest love stories ever told…about a man and his money,” it is the tale of Harpingon, the eponymous miser, and his attempts to marry off his children and protect his wealth from his heirs. A game of cat and mouse ensues over Harpingon’s treasure, with a frisson of forbidden love in the air as he tries to catch himself a young bride. BY BEN FINCH

NEWS: Hot air rises to fever pitch as Council gets testy
The Space last night played host to the latest in a series of fractious meetings of the Union’s student representative council. While the prevailing cliché casts students as apolitical layabouts, successive spirited meetings of the body have shown ego clashes and institutional bickering at least to be clearly transcendent of both age and stereotype. Speaker Alex Redpath addressed councillors’ concerns after the last meeting’s failed vote of no-confidence; votes of no-confidence have been scheduled for VPs Barry Duffy and Paul Lilly at a planned Extraordinary Meeting on May 12th; The Gown’s office suspension was debated and President-Elect Gareth McGreevy’s controversial SUTV plans were reaffirmed. COMMENT: Leader debate – The Cam and Clegg Show
BY KATHRYN McCANN
There is no doubt that the final leader debate and its focus on the economy was meant to be the highlight of the election campaign thus far. Unfortunately that accolade was stolen yesterday by a pensioner who while popping to the shop to buy a loaf of bread managed to bring Labour’s carefully stage-managed campaign to its knees; for a day at least.

REVIEW: The Gut Girls – Drama Studies Showcase
The Gut Girls is a fantastically powerful play with amazing performances from everyone involved. A Northern Irish premiere, it is the story of working class girls employed in a slaughterhouse in Deptford and their struggle to become who they want to be. A strongly feminist play, it deals with issues such as male dominance, misogyny, rape and how women can be “destined” to a life of domestic and marital drudgery. Despite all this, it is never preachy and is frequently hilarious. BY BEN FINCH

ARTS: Gut Girls
BY BEN FINCH
Bawdy comedy Gut Girls, written by Sarah Daniels, will be this year’s Drama Studies Showcase, running in the Brian Friel Theatre from Wednesday 28 April to Saturday 1 May. Professionally directed by Rachel O’Riordan of Ransom Productions, it is the story of a group of “brash, foul-mouthed but full of pride” working girls, labouring in a Victorian Slaughterhouse. An erudite, upper class widow, Lady Helena, takes it upon herself to tame and find ladylike employment for them. However, with one week’s pay in the slaughterhouse equal to one year’s wages as a servant she is “as welcome as a temperance speaker at the local pub.”

REVIEW: Life during Wartime
Todd Solondz is not a mainstream filmmaker and probably never will be. His films are dark (though funny) and very much for a niche audience. He is probably best known for 1998’s hilarious ‘Happiness’, which tackled paedophilia and other difficult subjects. His new film, ‘Life During Wartime’, is a sequel to ‘Happiness’, picking up ten years later and following the logical progression of all the same characters. COMMENT: UTV host political snooze fest
BY BRENDAN HUGHESSome initial reactions to last night’s general election debate starring our local politicians
After observing the televisual oddity that was the first national leaders’ debate last Thursday, hopes were high for another evening to rekindle fresh political discussion. Unfortunately though, this vague and hurried debate is unlikely to fire up the jaded masses.
