COMMENT: A student recalls her work experience with Cinemagic
How many of us who have chosen to venture down the road of an arts degree have had to face that unavoidable question of, “What are you going to do after…teaching I suppose?” As an English Literature student of Queen’s I can say I have had that question posed to me on many occasions . My response was always a rather unconvincing, “No..I’m not really sure”. However ladies and gentlemen, I had a break through this summer thanks to work experience. I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to work within a PR office for Cinemagic in Belfast. I really cannot emphasis the benefits of work experience, not only do you get a clear insight into a profession but you also learn a thing or two along the way. BY SUZANNE MCDONALD

ARTS: Filming on location… In Belfast
Belfast, a city famous for producing linen and luxury ocean liners is now, in the twenty first century, synonymous with films of the Hollywood blockbuster variety. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of films being shot in Belfast and Northern Ireland. The latest of which is currently being filmed at Paint Hall studios. Your Highness is a comedy-adventure of epic proportion that reunites stars of 2008 film Pineapple Express, James Franco and Danny McBride. BY KIRSTEN PARNELL

COMMENT: Christmas is early…again.
Every year, as soon as Halloween is over, suddenly it’s Christmas time. Starbucks have their limited edition mugs, Boots have their 3 for 2 on Christmas gifts, and yet again we hear “All I Want for Christmas is You.” BY EMMA GALLEN

SPORT: The next best thing to having wings…
The Queen’s University Belfast Gliding Cub (QUBGC) gives you the opportunity to experience flying at low cost. The membership fee for one year is only £25. It includes instruction and flying in the club’s own K-13 two seat glider. The QUBGC uses aerotow to get the glider airborne. For a £22 launch charge the glider will be towed to 2000 feet by a motored airplane. By Gown sport reporter

SPORT: Want to improve your pulling power?
“Rowing is a sport for dreamers. As long as you put in the work, you can own the dream, when the work stops, the dream disappears” – James Dietz Indeed, the university rowing is built on the premise of dreams. No other sport at Queen’s allows you to show up at try-outs with no previous experience and become a potential part of an Olympic racing team! The Queen’s team training is intensive. During the cold winter months a Queen’s rower is expected to rise six out of seven mornings to perform cardio-vascular activities; alternatively, if they are not to be found pumping away in the PEC, they are pushing their bodies to unknown boundaries on the water. Other students sometimes find it a personal achievement to rise before eleven and make it to class on time. BY ORLA MACKLE

ARTS: ‘Hanging in There’- A New Perspective on the Peace Process in Northern Ireland
On Friday 23rd of October The Gown met up with ‘Hanging in There,’ an internationally acclaimed act appearing at the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s. A number of journalists gathered to interview the pair of performers on the steps of Stormont. This was a symbolic location in many respects as the man-to-man dance duet, devised and performed by Nick Bryson and Damian Punch, see their act as a parody of the peace process in Northern Ireland.
