Comment: New library- Drive for excellence or unholy mess?

For those old timers at Queen’s like myself, it can certainly be agreed that the new library is a welcome addition to the University. For years we had the overcrowded and noisy Seamus Heaney library; a place that at times perhaps mirrored a night out rather than a study venue. We’ve had an antiquated, crumbling tower block, and a Science Library that also looked like something from the past. It was thought that The New Library at Queen’s would offer the ‘be all and end all’ solution to these problems. After all, it IS part of the University’s master plan: 1) Russell Group status 2) drive for Top 100 University status in world 3) attract as much money/investment as possible…blah blah blah…

REVIEW: We Live in Public

This film is a must-see if you are a slave to your Facebook updates  or you spend too much time blogging about the fact that you have just changed your socks and found a cat under your bed. This cautionary tale will make even the die-hard “social networkist” squirm grudgingly in their seats.

REVIEW: The White Ribbon

Winner of this year’s Palme d’Or award in Cannes, Michael Haneke’s ‘The White Ribbon’ is set in a pre WW1 agricultural German village, where order, rule and discipline are absolute, and enforced by the village Baron and heavily imposed on a moral level by the harsh and stern Protestant pastor. However, the structure of harmonious village life seems to disintegrate with the horrific events that ensue, and the sense of order is soon revealed as corrupt or non-existent.

In preparation for a Human Rights special in the next edition of The Gown (available Monday 30th November), have a look at this interesting YouTube video, which is about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

NB: If you can’t see the video, this is because Queen’s blocks YouTube on its computers between 9am and 5pm.

NEWS: EMC meeting sees VP McGreevy hit out at Gown’s presence in the Union

The Executive Management Committee’s weekly meeting took place today.  After apologies from 3 people and a few late arrivals, a room comprising ten committee members got proceedings underway.  The ‘open meeting’  (open to students and public alike) included only one non-committee member – the present writer – in addition to the Executive. The Gown’s presence resulted in VP Gareth McGreevy criticizing our publication.
