COMMENT: Bad for you, Bad for Business….Bad for the Country?

When an employer steps out of line, or demands something that their employees feel is unfair, what can the employees do? When their jobs are threatened and there seems to be no reason why they should have to face the nightmare that can befall the unemployed, shouldn’t they be able to challenge this decision in some way? Surely we should not all be at the mercy of employers who are legally permitted to ruthlessly attack workers’ rights and make their staff needlessly redundant, all in the name of profit.

REVIEW: Lunch at the Speakeasy

First the good news: The food was fine – Pizzas arrived generously topped, crispy and delicious to eat, the panini was okay and so was the soup, but was overpriced compared to the pizza and panini. We international postgraduate students had never been to this part of the Students’ Union before and were quite unsure about what to expect, although the promise of cheap pizza helped the decision.

OPINION: SUTV just doesn’t add up

Thirty thousand pounds. What would that mean to you? You could certainly do a lot of good with it. But the £30,000 I’m referring to is the ridiculous sum Queen’s Students’ Union propose spending on SUTV.

For me, entering final year was something that I would have dreaded adamantly back in fresher year when every worry that surrounds me now was a million miles away. Days of skipping class, watching DVD marathons and socialising at every possible opportunity were just some of the activities that consumed the life of a carefree humanities student.

COMMENT: Exploiting indebted student drivers?

Finding a parking space around Queen’s is a nightmare. Students who have saved and paid to learn the valuable skill to drive, and paid to insure and tax their cars, are being forced to abandon them in their driveways because it is simply impossible to find a space to park around Queen’s. This is an accepted grievance for student commuters who are getting up hours before lectures just to park. However, rumours of the introduction of paid parking around the city centre campus will not only frustrate local businesses but force indebted students to fork out even more to receive a university education.

It is officially BBQ season (again!). The sunshine encourages excess alcohol from lunchtime onwards. The streets, that BCC spend so much of Belfast tax/ratepayers money cleaning, are a mess of papers, bottles, broken glass, litter, broken furniture and the remnents of fires/BBQ’s etc.

COMMENT: Clubs and societies face challenges at QUB

The Refresher’s fair helped to boost the membership of the newest clubs and societies at Queen’s. The Lacrosse Club for instance, recruited 20 new members. The ranks of other new clubs, including the Boxing club, the Softball club and the Ultimate Frisbee club, have also grown. The new groups seem to be doing well despite certain setbacks, such as problems concerning facilities and training times. In the case of the Ultimate Frisbee Club, the problem lies with the fact that few seem to have heard of the club, or indeed the sport. Although the new clubs have teams with vast potential, they face financial challenges.
