Library opening hours extended

See the all-student email below that was sent from John Gormley (Information Services Directorate Office) informing students that the library’s opening hours will be extended from Monday 11 January until Thursday 21 January.

The entire library will be open until 1am from Sunday through to Thursday.

Dear student

Information Services is sensitive to the feedback which has been received in recent days in relation to the availability of the new library building during the examination period and we wish to assure students that we are monitoring use and occupancy levels on an ongoing basis and attempting to match provision to need in a timely way.

We are aware of the pressure on space in the late evening when the upper floors are closed and are therefore arranging to open the entire library for longer during the examination period (until 1.00am Sunday – Thursday) from Monday 11 January until Thursday 21 January. We are reliant on the availability of security cover provided by an external company in order to comply with health and safety requirements for the building and so are unable to commence this on Sunday 10 January as originally hoped.

Until the proposed changes come into effect, please be assured that the provision in the building is being monitored closely and appears to be meeting student needs. The auditorium (providing a minimum of 30 study seats) has been opened up for both daytime and overnight use. Training room 1 is also available for computer access throughout the week, including overnight. It is very important that students make use of all of the areas available to them as quite often the areas noted above are being seriously under used.

There is a significant cost outlay involved in opening up the entire library and while we are happy to comply with the request of students to do this, we hope that students will recognise that we work with finite resources and need to manage those carefully in order to provide the fullest range of library services to our users. Our priority throughout has been, and will continue to be, to deploy the available resources to the maximum benefit of students in a balanced way.

If you have any comments on library services please do not hesitate to contact us at library@qub.ac.uk.

Best wishes

John

Hi Gownies, I am wondering if you can help me.

Remember a few months ago our so called student Union President, Shane Brogan (who I voted for…)sent out an email to all students asking them to take part in a survey on the new library.

Well last week I just remembered about it and seeing that for some reason he never published the results I emailed Shane asking about it.

He never even replied to me.

Therefore as the Students journalists, is there anyway you could obtain the results of this survey and then publish on this website to enlighten the rest of the student body of its outcome?

Regards, Alan (that is my email address so feel free to contact me)
